JACKSON, Miss - It was a tough night for the Belhaven Blazers football team as they were outscored 39-17 in the second half, which led to their 60-31 defeat to Southwestern on Saturday evening at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
After trailing 7-0, running back Brad Foley put the Blazers on the board with a 30-yard touchdown reception from Quarterback Watson Fondren with 6:33 remaining in the first quarter.
Belhaven would capture the lead with a 7-yard rushing touchdown from Marquis Hedge to put the Blazers on top 14-7 with 7:27 left to go until halftime.
The Blazers would surrender 14 unanswered points as Southwestern would take a 7 point lead at the break.
Belhaven would even things up with a 15-yard touchdown reception from Quan Jones just three minutes into the third quarter to knot the score up at 21-21.
Southwestern's rushing attack had the Blazers defense off balance the entire second half as they would roar back and score two more touchdowns to take the 33-21 lead.
Belhaven would make things a little more interesting with a 33-yard touchdown reception from Watson Fondren to Brad Foley. With the touchdown the Blazers cut the Pirates lead to 33-28 with 6:45 left to go in the third quarter.
A late third quarter field goal by kicker Nick Guzman would not be enough for the Blazers comeback as Southwestern would tack on four more scores to claim the win over Belhaven 60-31.
Stepping in once again for the injured Hunter McEachern, quarterback Watson Fondren completed 36-56 passes for 428 yards, 3 touchdowns, and just one interception.
Brad Foley would lead the Blazers with 79 rushing yards on 10 carries while posting 99 receiving yards on 9 catches and 2 touchdowns. Marquis Hedge would add another touchdown to the Blazers running game.
Quan Jones had a stellar night in the passing game as he would collect 12 catches for 210 yards and 1 touchdown. The Blazers gained 510 yards of total offense for the game.
Defensively, leading tackler Denarrius Noel would lead the team with 11 total tackles, all of which were solo, while recording one sack.
Keith Marshall and David Lewis, would each register 7 tackles with Lewis adding one tackle for loss. As a defense the Blazers gave up 689 yards of total offense on the night.
Belhaven (1-5) will travel to play No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (6-0) next Saturday in Belton, Texas. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
