Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Layton Jackson

Blazers Win Third Straight with 62-49 Victory over SRSU

JACKSON, Miss. - With weather conditions in Jackson near subfreezing temperatures, the Blazers women's basketball team used a 9-0 run to start the game en route to the team's third consecutive win with a 62-49 defeating of Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon inside Rugg Arena.

Saturday's weather conditions did not stop the Blazers' hot offensive start, outscoring the Lobos, 25-10 in the opening quarter on 10-for-17 shooting, good for 59 percent. The Green and Gold started the contest on a 9-0 run.

Another contributor to the Blazers fiery start was the turnover game. SRSU totaled seven turnovers in the opening quarter, and BU cashed in on those turnovers with 10 points off the miscues.

Candler Gregory totaled 10 points in the opening quarter, with six of her points from downtown.

Thanks to key offensive rebounds by the Lobos in the second quarter, SRSU was able to get the deficit back to single digits at nine at intermission, 36-25.

The Lobos continued to chip away a deficit that was as high as 19 to three in the third quarter, but the Blazers, albeit scoring 4-for-14 (29 percent) from the field in the third, led the contest, 47-44, heading into the final 10 minutes.

Thanks to key free throw shooting and limiting SRSU (6-9) to 2-for-17 (12 percent) from the field, the Blazers earned their third straight victory and the fifth in the last six games.

With the win, the Blazers improve to 8-5, matching their win total of eight from a year ago.

Gregory finished the contest as the leading scorer with 17 points and five rebounds, while Sierra Pittman added eight points, three steals and two assists in the victory for the Green and Gold.

Vamikka Smith earned her fourth consecutive double-digit performance in rebounds, finishing with 11.

Samara Dingiswayo matched a career-best three blocks to go along with four rebounds and two steals.

Thanks to 25 SRSU turnovers, the Blazers cashed in a big way, outscoring the Lobos 23-9 in points off turnovers.

The Blazers will next travel to Louisiana College for the first of two matchups with the Lady Wildcats in ASC play. The first contest will commence Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
