PINEVILLE, La. - The Belhaven women's basketball team outscored the Louisiana College Wildcats 34-22 in the second half to come away with a 67-58 victory Thursday evening in Pineville, La. The win is the fourth in a row for the Blazers, and their sixth in the last seven games.
Belhaven (9-5) struggled with its shooting, finishing at just 27 percent from the field, but made up for it by knocking down its foul shots (20-26) and outworking Louisiana College (5-8) on the glass. The Blazers grabbed 59 total rebounds, a season-high, compared to the Wildcats' 48 boards. Twenty-eight of the Blazers' rebounds were on the offensive end, which led to 22 second chance points.
The Blazers entered the second half trailing the Wildcats 36-33, but a quick 8-2 run to start the thrid quarter put Belhaven ahead 41-38. Two
Candler Gregory three-pointers sandwiched a Sierra Pitman jumper, in just over a minute of play, to give the Green and Gold a three-point advantage.
Rolonda Washington made a putback layup with 33 seconds left in the quarter, and Iesha Dixon hit a baseline jumper seconds before the third quarter buzzer to give Belhaven a 52-48 lead heading into the final 10-minute period.
Washington converted another layup at the 8:27 mark of the fourth quarter, giving the Blazers a six-point advantage. That would be the Green and Gold's final field goal of the game, but the Blazers leaned on clutch foul shooting and tough defense to come away with the win. Belhaven went 11-12 from the free-throw line in the final two minutues of the game and held the Wildcats to 3-16 shooting in the fourth.
Pittman led the Blazers with 20 points in 22 minutes, including 15 in the second half and 10 in the fourth quarter alone. The senior guard made a season-high 12 free-throws in 13 attempts.
Gregory scored 15 points and added six rebounds, while shooting 4-9 from behind the arc. Washington recorded her first double-double of the season, tallying 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Vamikka Smith grabbed a season-high 14 boards to go along with five points.
Louisiana College didn't have a single player register double-digit point figures, but were led by Taylor Payne and Kourtney McGhee with nine points each.
Tonight's win gives the Blazers nine on the season, giving them one more than their 2015-16 season total of eight.
Next up, Belhaven travels to Marshall, Texas on Saturday to face East Texas Baptist at 3 p.m.
