Blazers Tame the Tigers

MARSHALL, TEXAS - The Belhaven women's basketball team kept its winning streak alive Saturday afternoon in Marshall, Texas, defeating East Texas Baptist University 67-54 for its fifth consecutive victory.

Belhaven shot a season-high 47 percent from behind in the arc in the win, making seven three-pointers in 15 attempts. Six of those were made by senior guard Samara Dingiswayo, who scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half.

The Blazers put together another strong defensive effort, holding the Tigers to just 34 percent shooting from the field and 19 percent from downtown. That marks the fourth straight game the Blazers have held its opponent below 35 percent from the floor and 20 percent from beyond the arc.

Both teams struggled on the offensive end at the start of the game, with Belhaven missing six of its first seven shots and ETBU unable to connect on five of its first seven attempts. Four minutes into the first period, the Tigers held just a 4-3 advantage.

Belhaven began to pick it up offensively midway through the second quarter, reeling off a 13-2 run to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead. Dingiswayo nailed two triples while Candler Gregory and Vamikka Smith each made a layup, and Sierra Pittman drained a jumper.

Three minutes into the second half, Dingiswayo grabbed an ETBU miss and took it to the other end for the fastbreak layup, putting the Blazers up 36-26, their first double-digit lead of the game. On the ensuing possession, Smith blocked a Tigers layup attempt, and Tajee Harper finished on the other end off the feed from Gregory, giving the Green and Gold a 12-point advantage.

ETBU trimmed the Blazers lead down to six with 2:18 on the third quarter clock, but another Dingiswayo three-pointer followed by a Ke'Asia Gray jumper quickly put Belhaven up by double-digits once again.

Belhaven held ETBU to just one made field goal in 10 attempts over the final five minutes of the fourth period, and was a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute of play to seal the road victory.

Dingiswayo finished with eight rebounds and three blocked shots to go along with her season-high 22 points. Gregory tallied 11 points and three assists while Harper added 10 points, six rebounds and three helpers.

Smith pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, her sixth straight game recording at least 10 boards. Gray chipped in with eight points off the Belhaven bench.

Hannah Holt paced the Tigers with 14 points and three steals. Delia Hopkins added eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Blazers improve to 10-5 with the win while ETBU drops to 2-13.

Next up, Behaven home to Rugg Arena on Thursday, Jan. 19, hosting ASC opponent LeTourneau University at 5:30 p.m.
