Blazing Second Half Shooting Not Enough as Blazers fall in OT

JACKSON, Miss. - After a strong second half to knot the score at 85 at the end of regulation, the Belhaven women's basketball team fell to UT Tyler, 105-94, Saturday afternoon inside Rugg Arena.

The first quarter was neck-and-neck, but the Green and Gold took off in the second quarter to as big of a lead as 11 points, 32-21, with 6:26 left in the half. However, the Patriots (13-5) went on a 22-2 run in the final 6:26 in the half to take a 45-34 lead at recess.

UT Tyler pushed the lead to a game high 15 with less than eight minutes left in the third quarter, but the Green and Gold (10-7) erased that deficit with an 19-8 run in almost four minutes to even the score at 57 points apiece. UTT pushed the lead to four late in the quarter, but Candler Gregory drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to put the Blazers deficit to one, 67-66.

In the fourth quarter, the Blazers got out to an early 8-0 run in a two and a half minute span to start the quarter. However, UTT got the game back squared at 79 with 4:03 left.

With 1:40 left in regulation, Vamikka Smith drained a jumper from Gregory to give the Blazers an 85-83 lead, but UTT's Michelle Obach sank two free throws to even the game once again at 85 with 1:31 left.

After the free throws, no team was able to score again in regulation, and the game was forced to overtime.

In the overtime period, after each team swapped layups, the Patriots went on a 10-1 run in a 1:45 span which helped clinch the win late.

Sierra Pittman led the Blazers with 29 points, 13-for-18 from the charity stripe. The senior added eight assists and two steals.

Gregory drained four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.

Samara Dingiswayo finished with 11 points, while Maleah Isaac totaled eight points and six boards for the Green and Gold.

Michelle Obach led UT Tyler with a game-high 30 points and dished out 10 assists, while Shuntay Raglin totaled 16 points.

Belhaven shot 44.9 percent (31-for-69), the fourth-highest percentage this season. In the second half, the Blazers outscored the Patriots, 50-41, while shooting 59 percent (16-for-27) from the field in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

The Blazers 94 points in a game ties the fifth-most in program history, according to acquired records. The Blazers marked 94 points in a game last on Jan. 8, 2007 at Dillard (La.).

The Blazers allow 100 points or more in a game for the first time since Feb. 17, 2005, in a 111-109 double overtime victory against Mobile (Ala.) in Jackson.

Belhaven will hit the road for their next trip, as the Green and Gold head to Richardson to take on Texas Dallas. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening.
