Blazers Suffer Overtime Loss to Rust

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven men's basketball dropped an 82-77 decision in overtime to Rust College Tuesday evening inside Rugg Arena.

Belhaven (2-13) held a 68-64 lead over Rust (2-16) with under a minute to play before Dewaun Fowler nailed a triple in the corner to cut the Blazers lead down to one. With just seven seconds to play, Brandon Pressley drained two free throws to make it a 70-67 game, but Rust's Jarvis Jackson banked in a straightaway three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Blazers made just three shots in 10 attempts while the Bearcats went 4-5 from the field. Belhaven took a 74-72 lead when Pressley finished a layup, but Fowler responded with back-to-back makes from downtown. Dyron Anderson hit a three of his own with just 45 seconds remaining to keep the Blazers in it, but it was Fowler again foiling the Green and Gold's night, dribbling from one end of the court to the other for the fastbreak layup.

After shooting just 37 percent from the field in the first half, Belhaven trailed the Bearcats by seven heading into halftime break. The Blazers recovered to shoot 56 percent in the second half and 50 percent from behind the arc.

A 13-5 Belhaven run early in the second period turned a seven point deficit into a 45-44 lead. Five different Blazers scored in the run, with Rick Hodum sinking a three while Anderson, Pressley, Kyle Patterson and Ron Davis all finishing layups.

With 7:40 to play Rust had regained the lead, 60-57, before the Blazers went on another impressive run, outscoring the Bearcats 11-2 over the next six minutes of play. Gian Van Heeringen keyed the run with a three-pointer from straight on, and Pressley made all six of his free throw attempts.

Davis paced the Blazers tonight, scoring 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half alone. The junior guard also dished out seven assists.

Pressley recorded a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double while Anderson added 12 points and four assists.

Brent Webber led a strong bench effort for the Blazers, finishing with nine points and three boards. Hodum and Van Heeringen tallied seven points each while Justin Jones added five points, all coming off of the Belhaven bench.

Antono Jones led Rust with 23 points and 19 rebounds. Fowler finished with 19 points on 5-8 shooting from downtown while Jarvis chipped in with 16 points.

Belhaven will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 19, hosting ASC foe LeTourneau University at 7:30 p.m.
