JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's basketball team couldn't match the marksmanship of the ASC East-leading LeTourneau University YellowJackets Thursday night inside Rugg Arena, falling 102-78.
Belhaven (2-14) shot 49.2 percent from the field, their sixth-best shooting night of the season, but LeTourneau (14-4) finished a scorching 61.8 percent from the floor and 45 percent from behind the arc.
The Blazers jumped out to an early 14-9 lead over the YellowJackets, making six of their first 10 shot attempts.
Brandon Pressley,
Dyron Anderson, Gian Van Heeringen and
DJ Young-Beasley all got on the board early for the Green and Gold.
A quick 9-0 LeTourneau run put the Blazers in a four-point hole, but a
Ron Davis three made it a 21-20 game with 11:50 remaining in the first half.
At the 8:39 mark of the half,
Brent Webber nailed a triple and Davis made a fastbreak layup on the ensuing Belhaven possession to knot the score at 26 apiece. However, LeTourneau took advantage of eight Belhaven turnovers over the final six minutes of the half to close the period on a 24-8 run and take a 50-34 lead into the break.
And despite Dyron Anderson scoring 16 points, including four three-pointers, in the first eight minutes of the second half, the Blazers still found themselves trailing the YellowJackets by 18 points.
Belhaven was unable to trim LeTourneau's lead below 16 points for the entirety of the final 20-minute period. One bright spot for the Blazers in the second half was the play of
Isiah Brown, who scored 14 points - including 10 in a row - in just six minutes of play.
Anderson finished with 20 points on 8-11 shooting to pace the Blazers while Pressley picked up his sixth double-double of the season, recording 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Brown's 14 points is a career-high for the freshman. Sophomore forward
Cornelius Mitchell also set a career-high in points, totaling six while shooting a perfect 3-3 from the field.
Alec Colhoff and Jeff Martin scored 18 points each for the YellowJackets while shooting a combined 15-24 from the floor. Nate West added 14 points, four assists and three steals.
Next up, the Blazers hosts ASC foe Texas-Tyler on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m.
