Men's Basketball Dropped by Louisiana College

PINEVILLE, La. - Belhaven men's basketball dropped an 82-71 decision to the Louisiana College Wildcats Thursday evening in Pineville, La.

Belhaven (2-11) looked good early, taking a 21-13 lead over Louisiana College (3-10) when senior guard Ron Davis knocked in a three-pointer at the 11:20 mark of the first half. The Blazers drained five three-pointers in the first ten minutes of play, with Davis and sophomore guard Brent Webber hitting two each and freshman guard Rick Hodum making one of his own.

The Wildcats fought back, going on an 11-2 run to take a 24-23 lead with 8:06 to play in the half. Louisiana then closed the half by outscoring Belhaven 13-3 over the final five minutes to take a 46-33 advantage heading into the halftime break. After their hot start, the Green and Gold shot just 4-13 in the final ten minutes of the half while the Wildcats made 11 layups during that span.

Belhaven opened the second half scoring eight points unanswered to trim Louisiana College's lead down to five points, 46-41. Webber and junior forward Brandon Pressley converted back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays, and Davis picked the pocket of a Wildcat ball handler and finished the fastbreak layup on the other end.

But the Blazers were unable to keep the momentum going and Louisiana College increased its lead to double-digits with a 10-2 run. The closest the Blazers would get to the Wildcats' lead for the remainder of the game was seven points at the 13:03 mark of the second half, after junior guard Dyron Anderson drilled a three from the left wing.

Belhaven shot 44.8 percent from the field for the game, their highest shooting percentage in five games. The Blazers also dished out 18 assists, its fourth-highest total of the season, while recording a season-low 12 turnovers.

Davis registered 19 points, five assists and three steals to pace Belhaven. Pressley added 13 points and seven rebounds while Webber finished with 11 points. Hodum chipped in with a career-high eight points.

Louisiana College finished at 51.6 percent from the floor, and four different Wildcat players scored at least 12 points. Raheem Regis led the Wildcats with 20 points and nine rebounds off of the bench.

Next up, the Blazers head to Marshall, Texas on Saturday to take on East Texas Baptist University at 3 p.m.
