JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's soccer team won its second consecutive game Tuesday evening, defeating Riverside rival Millsaps College 4-1.
The win marks the 52nd victory of head coach
Josue Sabillon's Belhaven career, tying David Dixon's school record.
The Blazers jumped on the Majors early, as freshman forward
Erica Rempel scored her third goal of the season just three minutes after the opening whistle.
Rachyl Sutton made it 2-0 in favor of the Blazers, notching her first goal of the season in the 16th minute of play.
Belhaven continued to put the pressure on the Millsaps backline, and
Dominique Farias found the back of the net in the 26th minute to give the Blazers a three-goal advantage.
The Majors got one goal back in the second half as Maria Welch scored 14 minutes into the final period.
But the Blazers would push their lead back to three goals just seven minutes later as Rempel played a through ball to
Jessica Mahoney, who slotted a shot past the Major goalie outstretched arms into the back of the net.
Belhaven recorded 17 total shots and eight shots on goal while holding Millsaps to seven shots and three shots on goal.
Mahoney paced the Blazers with four shots while Rempel and
Catherine Waggonner added three shots each.
Belhaven improves to 3-5 with the win while Millsaps falls to 0-7-1 with the loss.
Next up, the Blazers look increase their win streak to three games when they travel to Alpine, Texas for a match versus ASC opponent Sul Ross State on Thursday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
