RIDGELAND, Miss. - The Belhaven men's soccer team picked up a 2-0 shutout win over McMurry University Saturday afternoon at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland, Miss.
The Blazers scored two goals within a three-minute span midway through the first half.
Sam Joy scored on a penatly kick in the 26th minute of play, firing a low, hard shot into the bottom right corner of the back of the net.
Just under three mintues later,
Nathan Ratzlaff made it 2-0 in favor of Belhaven, scoring off of a
Kobe Van Someren corner kick.
Belhaven (2-4-1) controlled possession for the majority of the match and fired a total of 20 shots, a season-high.
Twelve different Blazers players recorded at least one shot, led by
Phillip Nichols' three shots.
Nicolas Cornejo,
John Dunbar,
Somto Ngwudike,
Johnathan Goliday, Joy and Ratzlaff totaled two shots each.
The Blazers defense held the War Hawks (3-4-1) to just one shot in the first half and six shots for the game. Only two of those shots were on target.
Josh Gates picked up his third shutout of the season, making two saves in goal for the Green and Gold.
Belhaven has now won two of its past three games with both wins coming against American Southwest Conference opponents.
Next up, the Green and Gold take on Riverside Drive rival Millsaps College on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
