JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven volleyball team showed consistency in their attacking game Tuesday night inside Rugg Arena, as the Green and Gold defeated William Carey 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-20).
The Blazers dominated on the attack, notching their third highest attacking percentage of the season (.248) and tying their second lowest output of errors (12).
Lauren Whiting and
Hope Tourney each totaled seven kills for the Green and Gold, who improve their overall record back to .500 (6-6). The duo also committed just one error each.
"Hope played very well tonight. She came out and hammered the ball," commented head coach
Justin Dee. "We have been working with her offense and the ability to hit the ball harder, and she hit the ball well tonight."
Kelly Aholt, who recorded six kills and no errors while adding four blocks, also assisted on 24 attacks. She now surpasses the 1,500 assist mark for her career and now has 1,520 assists in her career at Belhaven.
"There was not one person who stood out on the night with kills, and that is contributed to Kelly and our overall play", added Dee.
Blaykleigh Smythe, who recorded five kills on the night, also blocked five defensive attacks.
Jackie Gunderson led the way in the digs category with 11, while
Lexi Brantley and
Abbey Herman each added nine.
"Offensively, we are very proud of how we played tonight. Defensively, we played well, but there are some things to look at before we head back on the road," said Dee.
Megan Zulli and Lisa Faolotoi had a match-leading 10 kills each for William Carey (5-8).
The Blazers return to the road for the first of two ASC Crossovers. The first will be at Concordia Texas in Austin. The Crossover begins with matches against Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday.
