Belhaven Splits Season Opener at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Belhaven volleyball team fell to Oglethorpe before coming back to win its second match of the day against Keystone on Friday afternoon at the Second Annual Stormy Petrel Challenge at the Dorough Field House.

In the opener against host Oglethorpe, the Blazers fell to the hosts of the tournament 0-3 (16-25, 20-25, 22-25) to start the day.

After a first set attacking percentage of .029, the Blazers rallied to a .138 percentage, but could not hold the Petrels attack, as Oglethorpe out-killed Belhaven 38-34 in the match.

Blaykleigh Smythe led the way for the Green and Gold in the opener, as she struck for eight kills and a .316 attacking percentage. She also added five digs and a block.

Kelly Aholt handed out 24 assists and added six digs.

Lexi Brantley began her collegiate career with seven kills, five assists and digs each and assisted on two blocks.

Oglethorpe was led by Santreece Stephens with 10 kills and 11 digs. Jordan Jones notched 17 assists in the win for the Petrels.

In the nightcap, after falling in the first set to Keystone 23-25, the Blazers (1-1) came back to win the next three sets 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23.

The match turned into a see-saw effort, where neither team had the advantage of creating a long rally. The longest rally of the match was a 7-0 run by the Blazers in the third set.

Smythe added 20 more kills to her afternoon with only three errors. She finished the day with 28 kills on five total errors for a .442 attacking percentage.

Freshmen Brantley and Hope Tourney added quality attacks for the Green and Gold. Tourney finished with 11 kills and Brantley added 10 to her day.

Emily Davis dug up 21 attacks in the win, and Abbey Herman added 16 digs.

Aholt racked up 40 assists, while Tourney and Smythe added three blocks apiece.

The Blazers finished with a team .184 attacking percentage on 59 total kills.

Hannah Zuchowski led the Giants with 12 kills and Pamela Heitman added 23 digs in the contest.

"Our game plan was to set the middle early and often," said head coach Justin Dee. "I would say it worked out with Blaykleigh's 20 kills and our freshmen Hope and Lexi helped with double-digit kills as well. We did not play quite as well in some points, but executed the game plan well and finished with the victory. We plan to bring the momentum from tonight into tomorrow's matches."

With Aholt's 64 assists on Friday, she now secures the fifth-best mark in school history in that category with 1,271. Next up is 1,742, accomplished from 2003-06 by Amy Lejarzar.

The Green and Gold will wrap up the Stormy Petrel Challenge on Saturday with a doubleheader against Transylvania and Piedmont. The first match will open at 10 a.m. (ET), with the second match to commence at 2 p.m. (ET).
