Volleyball Drops Two in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Belhaven volleyball team dropped two matches in the Stormy Petrel Challenge to Transylvania 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 17-25) and Piedmont 3-0 (16-25, 23-25, 19-25).

In the opening match vs. Transylvania, the Blazers got out to a hot start with the first set victory, but the Green and Gold were unable to continue the momentum from the opening set, as they allowed 36 kills to their 21.

Blaykleigh Smythe recorded 12 kills and blocked three Pioneer attacks.

Abbey Herman finished with 24 digs on the match, and Kelly Aholt had 20 assists.

Taryn Glass struck for 10 kills in the win for the Pioneers, while Marissa Coutinho added 27 digs.

In their second match against Piedmont, with the Blazers (1-3) in injury trouble, the Green and Gold were unable to continue many rallies on defense thanks to 15 receiving errors.

Freshman Lexi Brantley recorded six kills, while senior Annelle Anderson added five against the Lions.

Herman recorded 14 digs in the final match, while Aholt and Allie Perkins added eight digs each.

Katelyn Durmire finished with seven blocks for the Lions in the victory, while Amanda Trotter recorded seven kills.

Smythe completed her weekend with 44 kills, averaging 3.14 per set, with a .378 attacking percentage.

Brantley and Aholt were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances this weekend.

Aholt recorded 102 assists, averaging 7.29 per set. She also added 18 kills and 32 digs.

Brantley's first four collegiate matches were memorable, as she spiked 24 kills with 12 assists. She also added 28 kills and recorded four blocks.

"We are disappointed with the outcome of our results this weekend," said head coach Justin Dee. "Kelly and Blaykleigh had a great tournament, but we need to get better at our passing and blocking. We are hopeful to be back to full strength next weekend for our home tournament."

Up next, the Green and Gold will prepare for the Belhaven Classic in Rugg Arena. The Blazers will play Centenary and Huntingdon Friday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
