JACKSON, Miss. - Behind a record-breaking performance from senior wide receiver
LaMiquell Roberts, the Belhaven football team defeated Millsaps College 28-25 Thursday night in the seventh edition of the Riverside Rumble.
Roberts caught 14 passes, tying the school's single game record set by Cordario Calvin in 2010. Roberts also tallied 220 receiving yards, topping the previous Belhaven single game record of 208, established by Justin Kenyon in 2013.
The Blazers were able to turn a 17-7 halftime deficit into a three-point win, thanks to a 14-0 third quarter. Starting quarterback
Hunter McEachern connected with
Darien Thomas for a 12-yard touchdown strike early in the third to trim Millsaps' lead down to three points. That play capped off a 57-yard drive that included a 26-yard reception by Roberts.
Just a few minutes later in the third, McEachern would keep it himself for a one-yard touchdown run, giving the Blazers their first lead of the game. That drive began with a squib kick by kicker
Rogelio Rodriguez that was recovered by Belhaven's
Len Fairley, turning possession right back over to the Blazers at the Majors' 32 yard line.
Twenty minutes would roll off the game clock before either team put any more points on the scoreboard. Each team put together a long, sustained drive to begin the fourth quarter, but the end result was a punt in each situation.
Nursing a 21-17 lead midway through the fourth, Belhaven took over possession at the 7:05 mark of the period, looking to increase its slim advantage heading down the stretch. Four minutes later, McEachern delivered a 24-yard touchdown pass to
Nate Williams, extending the Blazers' lead to 11 points with just over three minutes to play.
There was still plenty of football left to play, however, and the Majors proceeded to march 74 yards down the field on the ensuing drive, ending with a Andrew Warren rushing touchdown. Millsaps tacked on two points with a successful two-point conversion attempt to cut the Blazers down to just three points, 28-25.
On the very first play of the ensuing Belhaven drive, the Blazers surrendered their first fumble of the game, giving Millsaps the ball at their own 26-yard line with 1:03 remaining.
The Majors picked up two first downs and advanced to the Belhaven 47-yard line, but the Blazers defense held strong, forcing two straight incomplete passes to end the game and seal the win.
With tonight's win, Belhaven moves to 4-3 in the rivalry matchup versus Millsaps and snaps a three-game losing streak to the Majors.
McEachern, making his first ever Blazers appearance, finished the game with 334 passing and three touchdowns on 30 completions. He also rushed for 37 yards.
Defensively,
Jack Lacy,
Garrett Osborne and
Alvin Vaughn led the way for the Blazers with seven tackles each.
Maurice Stewart added six tackles and also broke up two passes.
Belhaven finished with 420 total yards of offense while Millsaps recorded 400 yards of total offense.
The Blazers will have an extra two days rest and preparation heading into next Saturday's game against the nationally ranked Warhawks of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The game is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Whitewater.
