Blazers Unable to Withstand Second Half Rally by No. 2 Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Belhaven football team had a four-point deficit at halftime but were unable to stop Wisconsin-Whitewater's running game in the second half, as the Green and Gold fell to the No. 2 team in the nation, 59-13 Saturday afternoon at Perkins Stadium.

Wisconsin-Whitewater started the scoring early with a four-yard touchdown run by Jarrod Ware.

On the next Whitewater drive, the Warhawks (2-0) attempted a fake punt, where the punter Michael Schwichtenberg attempted a pass on fourth down and three yards to go. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the Green and Gold started with good field position at the 34-yard line.

After an incomplete pass and a rushing play for a loss, the Blazers (1-1) struck for a game-tying touchdown catch by Darien Thomas, connecting 41 yards from Hunter McEachern

With a 7-7 tie going into the second quarter, the Green and Gold capitalized on defense right away. After a McEachern interception at the 18-yard-line, the Warhawks got it to the 20-yard-line, before a fumble by quarterback Chris Nelson on a sack. The Blazers recovered the fumble at the 13-yard-line.

With the Blazers inside the redzone, McEachern found Jaquay Daniels for a four-yard touchdown reception. Alonso Acosta's point after attempt was no good, but Belhaven still had a 13-7 lead against the No. 2 team in the country.

On the next possession, Whitewater responded with a 43-yard field goal to cut Belhaven's lead to three, 13-10.

Later in the quarter, Belhaven would try to add on their lead, but came up inches short. After a defensive stop at the Belhaven 40 yard-line, McEachern had completions to Nate Williams and LaMiquell Roberts for 30 and 29 yards, respectively.

After the reception by Roberts, the Blazers were a yard away from making it a two-possession game. McEachern tried to punch the ball in twice in the endzone, but was unsuccessful in both attempts. On third down, McEachern lost the ball before the ball crossed the plain, and the Warhawks recovered the fumble in the endzone.

From that point on, the momentum was in the possession of the Warhawks. In the final 34:41 of the game, Wisconsin-Whitewater scored seven unanswered touchdowns to decide the game for good.

McEachern finished the day 38-for-76 with 454 yards, two touchdowns and six costly interceptions.

Darien Thomas caught nine passes for 144 yards and a touchdown to lead the Green and Gold in the receiving core. Williams and Roberts also went over 100 yards receiving, with 111 and 107 yards, respectively.

Isaac Nelson and Maurice Stewart each picked off a pass on the defensive end. Nelson led the way with 10 tackles.

McEachern's 76 passing attempts breaks a school record, set last season by Clayton Webb (72) in the opener at Millsaps.

The Blazers will next travel to No. 21 Huntingdon next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
