BELTON, Texas - Senior forward
Nicolas Cornejo broke a scoreless tie in the 87th minute of play at Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon, lifting the Belhaven men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the American Southwest Conference foe.
Cornejo scored an absolute cracker of a game-winning goal, taking a cross from
Tom Aston just outside the 18-yard box and sending a screaming shot into the top left corner of the goal. The Crusaders' goalkeeper never even had a chance to move.
The win is the first of the 2016 season for the Blazers as they move to 1-3-1 on the year. Mary Hardin-Baylor drops to 5-3 with the loss.
The Crusaders outshot Belhaven 14-7, but Blazers goalkeeper
Josh Gates along with the starting backline of
Phillip Nichols,
Simon Gouabault,
Piercen Burchfield and
Jack Cutler defended the goal well.
Gates recordes six saves in goal and collected his second shutout of the season.
Ryan Thomas totaled a team-high two shots.
Next up, the Blazers return home to host Hardin-Simmons on Thursday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's game.
