JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Belhaven Classic on Saturday. The Blazers defeated Lyon College 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 28-26) before falling to NCAA Division II Mississippi College 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 26-28).
Jackie Gunderson paced Belhaven in the win over Lyon with a team-high eight kills and ten digs.
Hope Tourney added six kills and three blocks.
Kelly Aholt totaled 17 assists and a season-high four service aces while
Abbey Herman led the Blazers with 19 digs. Herman also served up a season-high four aces.
As a team, Belhaven recorded a season-high 12 service aces with five different Blazers contributing. Lyon totaled 34 kills to Belhaven's 26, but the Scots committed more mistakes, finishing with 52 total combined errors while the Blazers finished with 32.
In the Blazers' second game of the day and the final game of the Belhaven Classic, Belhaven played Mississippi College close in all three sets and pushed the final set to a 28-26 conclusion. Each set was a back-and-forth affair, with the largest set lead for either team being just six points.
Tourney and
Lauren Whiting led the Green and Gold with eight kills each. Tourney committed zero attack errors in 15 attempts, good for a .533 attacking percentage. Aholt added three more service aces, bringing her season total to 15.
Defensively,
Allie Perkins and
Emily Davis collected seven digs apiece while
Blaykleigh Smythe had a team-high three blocks.
Belhaven moves to 4-4 on the season with the conclusion of the Belhaven Classic. Next up, the Blazers travel to Birmingham, Ala. on Tuesday, Sept. 13 to face Miles College, another NCAA Division II opponent. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
