LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Belhaven men's soccer team was unable to rally from an early hole versus Maryville at the David Taaffe Invitational Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard, hosted by Covenant College.
Maryville (3-1) started the scoring in the fifth minute with Tim Baker's second goal of the season.
In the 30th minute, Hayden Puryear netted his first goal of the season to give the Scots a 2-0 lead.
The Scots extended the lead to 3-0 with a 34th minute goal by Andrew Sullivan, but the Blazers (0-2-1) broke the shutout two minutes later.
Simeon Ekugwum scored his first goal of the year off an assist by
Drew Lanke.
Coming out of halftime down 3-1, the Blazers cut the deficit to one goal with a 51st minute score by
Nicolas Cornejo. His second goal of the year was off a free kick.
However, the Scots scored an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. Caleb Lucas scored his second goal of the year to make it 4-2, which would hold through 90 minutes.
Josh Gates saved three shots in the match for the Blazers in goal.
Belhaven's road trip continues on their first Texas trip of the season next weekend. The Green and Gold will open American Southwest Conference play with Concordia Texas Friday afternoon.
