JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's soccer team dropped its 2016 season opener Thursday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field, falling to the Ladies 3-0.
After a scoreless first 29 minutes of play, Centenary's Kati-Jayde Cunningham broke through with an unassisted goal to give the Ladies 1-0 lead. Emily Duet scored the second goal of the day at the 41:44 mark of the first half, putting Centenary up by two goals heading into the halftime break.
Centenary totaled 10 shots in the first half to Belhaven's five, but both teams recorded three shots on goal. The Blazers tallied four corner kicks through the first 45 minutes of play while the Ladies had just one.
Belhaven nearly got on the board 15 minutes into the second half as
Dominique Farias' shot sailed past the goalie's arm and careened off the post. Just a few minutes later,
Jessica Mahoney played a beautiful through ball to an open
Savannah Raines just inside the 18-yard box. Centenary's goalkeeper made a diving save on Raines' shot attempt to prevent the Blazers from netting their first goal.
Centenary would tack on a third goal in the 70th minute to take a 3-0 lead.
Belhaven finished the game with 11 total shots and six shots on goal while Centenary recorded 12 shots and four shots on goal.
Raines, Farias, Mahoney and
Suzanne Dease led the Blazers with two shots each. Both of Raines' shots were on frame.
Next up, Belhaven hosts Birmingham-Southern at Newell Field on Saturday, Sept. 3. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
