JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers set a new school record on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne University 9-0 and 13-2 at Jim McLeod Field.
With the victory in game one, the Blazers broke the school record for consecutive wins with the teams 19th straight victory in a one-hit performance by
Julienne Broussard.
Broussard earned her 12th victory of the season, striking out 10 batters without allowing a walk.
Belhaven was held scoreless in the first inning, but scored at least one run in every inning the rest of the way over the two games.
All nine starters had at least one hit in game one, combining for 12 total hits and two walks.
Brooke Laigast hit a ball in to right field to start the scoring with
Savannah Lyon crossing the plate for the opening run and
Taylor O'Dell scored on an error for the second run of the second inning.
Makenzie Hawkins hit a solo homerun in the third inning and then the Blazers scored six runs in the fourth inning to cruise to a 9-0 win. Laigast started the scoring again with a bunt single.
Dani Craft followed it up with a 2 RBI single to left center and
Savannah Lyon followed it up with another 2 RBI hit to left center. O'Dell capped the scoring off with another RBI base hit to left center.
In game two, Hawkins and
Carly Yasses had RBI singles in the first inning to put the Blazers up and they never looked back.
Craft started a four run inning in the second with an RBI single.
Savannah Johnston stole home on a double steal and Lyon followed it up with 2 RBI single.
In the third, Craft and Hawkins had RBI hits to put the Blazers up 9-1 and Belhaven would go on to add four more runs in the fourth.
Jordan Herring earned her 7th win of the season, striking out six while allowing just one earned run.
Belhaven will wrap the series on Saturday with an 11 a.m. start against the Yellow Jackets.
