Softball Rallies to Sweep Twin Bill with UMHB

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Softball team used key defense in game one and their bats in game two to take the doubleheader from Mary Hardin-Baylor, winning 1-0 and 14-8.

In game one, the inning that brought drama was in the fourth inning. After Julienne Broussard was pulled for Taylor Surrento, she allowed a leadoff error and single. Followed a wild pitch and a walk to load the bases, Mary Hardin-Baylor induced a triple play. The play started on a flyout to Hannah Holloway in right field via a shoestring catch. Holloway threw the ball to Haley Yasses at first base, who threw the ball to Dani Craft at third to complete the triple play.

In the bottom half of the frame, After a Haley Yasses single and a Taylor O'Dell sacrifice bunt, Craft brought the go-ahead run home on a single.

Surrento finished the job for the Blazers in game one, going four innings, allowed one hit and two walks with one strikeout.

Broussard started for the Green and Gold and struck out six on three innings.

In game two, the Blazers (30-6) responded three different times in the contest to get back in the contest and eventually take the lead. In the first, UMHB scored a run in the first, but the Blazers tied the contest at one, with Haley Yasses brought home Craft, who started the inning with a leadoff walk.

In the third, Mary Hardin-Baylor (19-18) took its second lead with a three-run inning to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Lady Crusaders, but the Blazers came back for three runs to retie the game at four apiece, thanks to back-to-back home runs by the Yasses sisters. Carly Yasses stroked a two-run home run to right center, while Haley Yasses added a solo home run of her own to left center.

In the fifth, UMHB scored four times to retake the lead for a third time, 8-3, but the Blazers' third comeback effort would put the Blazers in the lead for good, as the Green and Gold scored 10 unanswered runs to seal the 14-8 victory.

In the five-run fifth, Savannah Lyon scored the first run home in the frame with a double, scoring Makenzie Hawkins. After a popup, Crystal Kehtel singled in Lyon and Haley Yasses. After a wild pitch, Craft brought Kehtel and Mary Austin Barber home.

Belhaven added five more insurance runs in the sixth. After Carly Yasses reached on an error, Haley Yasses brought her home on a single. Four batters later, with the bases loaded, Dani Craft smashed a grand slam to left field to make the lead 14-8 in favor of the Blazers.

Surrento (9-3) relieved Jordan Herring in the fifth in game two of the twin bill, and secured both wins in the sweep.

Craft finished the day with seven RBIs, with six coming in game one of the twin bill, tying the most in a game, which last happened in 2011.

The regular season will wrap up on Saturday, as the Blazers will honor six seniors prior to first pitch on Saturday at 12 noon from McLeod Field.
