Pitching, Defense Leads Blazers to Doubleheader Sweep of McMurry

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of the McMurry War Hawks on Friday afternoon from Smith-Wills Stadium, winning 4-0 and 3-1.
 
In game one, Belhaven started the scoring in the first inning. After Dane Gecina reached on a fielding error and a wild pitch, Terrell Hodges tripled to score Gecina from second.
 
The Blazers added two runs in the bottom of the third. Trey Eschberger scored both runs on a two-run RBI double, bringing home Gecina and Jacob Byrd.
 
The fourth run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Nick Rucker walked and took second, Gabe Veith singled to put the runners at the corners. During JG Miley's at bat, Veith was caught stealing second, while Rucker broke for home during the caught stealing and scored easily to make the lead 4-0 in advantage of the Green and Gold.
 
The key defensive play of the game came in the seventh. After both War Hawks hitter reached base on a single and hit by pitch, respectively, McMurry flew out into a triple play. Byrd made a diving catch in left center field, and was able to relay the ball to Will Mullen, who threw the ball to Miley for the second out, before tossing the ball over to Eschberger to secure the triple play.
 
Shane Brown (2-3) went the distance for the Green and Gold in game one, allowed four hits, two walks and struck out two batters.
 
In game two, the Blazers (20-16, 10-10) got out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to an Eschberger RBI single, bringing home Gecina.
 
The Blazers added a key insurance run in the sixth. With Gecina at third base, Adam Kowalczyk brought him home on a throwing error.
 
McMurry (16-20, 10-10) scored a run in the eighth, but Belhaven answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame to regain a two-run lead. With two outs in the inning, Terrell Hodges singled, followed by a stolen base. Kowalczyk brought him home on an RBI single.
 
Tanner Moulder (6-3) went the distance for Belhaven in the doubleheader sweep, allowed six hits on one unearned run and struck out four.
 
Belhaven will wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, as the Blazers will honor 12 seniors prior to first pitch, scheduled for 1 p.m.
