Baseball Unable to Complete Late Rally on Senior Day

JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven used a four-run eighth to bring the contest to a one-run deficit, but McMurry held on to defeat the Blazers 6-5 to spoil Senior Day at Smith-Wills Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
 
Prior to first pitch, the Blazers honored 11 seniors, Justin Atkinson, Jacob Byrd, Trey Eschberger, Dane Gecina, Adam Kowalczyk, CJ Machete, Austin McCann, Tanner Moulder, Zach Osha, James Peterson and Stephen Solomon.
 
The Blazers also paid tribute to Devin McCann, who was also a senior before the Glenolden, Pennsylvania native was tragically killed in a car crash in January. His family was in attendance, and his father, Dan McCann, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
 
McMurry (17-20, 11-10) got out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, but the Blazers (20-17, 10-11) countered with a run in the bottom of the second. After three straight singles by Daniel Ammirati, Will Mullen and Gabe Veith, JG Miley brought Ammirati home on a fielder's choice. That run tied the contest at one apiece.
 
The War Hawks responded with five unanswered runs to push the lead to 6-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Blazers scored four times in the frame and sent ten batters to the plate to get the game back within one run.
 
In the eighth, the Blazers started the frame with six straight base runners. After Terrell Hodges led off the frame with a single, Adam Kowalczyk doubled Hodges home for the first run of the frame. Trey Eschberger followed with an RBI single to bring home Kowalczyk, The third run scored with the bases loaded. Veith brought home Eschberger. After a strikeout, Jacob Byrd reached on a fielder's choice to score the fourth run of the frame in the form of Ammirati and cut the deficit to 6-5.
 
After a scoreless top of the ninth, the Blazers had runners at the corners with two outs, before the game ended on a strikeout.
 
The Blazers racked up 15 hits in the contest, but left 12 on base in the contest.
 
Zach Osha (1-6) started for the Green and Gold and went three and two-thirds innings, allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits, with two strikeouts.
 
Belhaven will wrap up the regular season with a trip to Birmingham, Alabama with a non-conference matchup against the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. from Striplin Field.
