JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team extended its win streak to 18 straight games on Saturday with a 6-1 win over Hardin-Simmons.
Belhaven's win streak this season matches the school record, which was set back in 2011,
Kevin Griffin's first season with the program.
The Blazers faced a little adversity as Hardin-Simmons jumped out to a lead with a solo homerun in the top of the third. However, Belhaven responded with a big inning in the bottom half.
Taylor Surrento and
Crystal Kehtel started off the inning with walks.
Savannah Johnston then hit a bunt single to the left side to load the bases.
Surrento scored on a wild pitch and then
Dani Craft hit a two-RBI double off the fence in left field to put the Blazers up 3-1.
Savannah Lyon capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to score Craft.
Haley Yasses extended the lead with a solo homerun to lead off the fourth inning, putting the Blazers up 5-1.
Belhaven would go on to add one more run in the sixth with
Meg Garton's RBI groundout to the right side that scored
Hannah Holloway.
Surrento picked up the win, pitching a complete game, allowing just the one run on four hits and two walks. Surrento finished with five strikeouts.
Belhaven will return to action next weekend with a three-game series against Howard Payne.
