Belhaven Unable to Comeback from Early Deficit against MC

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team, down 8-0 through three innings, could not complete the come-from-behind bid against Mississippi College Tuesday evening at Smith-Wills Stadium.

The Blazers broke the shut out in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs in the frame. Thanks to four wild pitches by the Choctaws pitcher, both Will Mullen and Daniel Ammirati were able to score in the frame.

Down 9-2 headed to the bottom half of the fifth, the Blazers (18-16) scored five times in the inning to cut the deficit to 9-7. After Trey Eschberger reached on a fielder's choice, Ammirati singled and Mullen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. JG Miley doubled down the right field line, bringing home Ammirati and Eschberger.

After a Gabe Veith groundout for the second out of the frame, Dane Gecina reached base on an infield single, bringing home Mullen and Miley, who was able to score from second. After a stolen base at second, Gecina took third as well and scored the seventh run of the contest on a throwing error by the Mississippi College (14-26) catcher.

The Choctaws scored twice in the sixth to push the lead to 11-7, but the Blazers responded in the bottom half of the seventh. Mullen singled up the middle and got to second on a Miley groundout. Veith followed with an infield hit to third to put runners at the corners.

During Gecina's at bat, a balk brought home the eighth run when Mullen scored. Gecina, two pitches later, doubled to bring home Veith.

The lead was 11-9 in favor of the cross-town rivals from Clinton, but the Choctaws added two key insurance runs in the ninth to seal the victory.

Gecina went 3-for-4 on the night, with three RBIs, while Miley also drove in three RBIs.

Zach Osha (1-5) allowed four first inning runs, five total runs, in two innings pitched, with three strikeouts.

Belhaven will wrap up their home schedule with a three-game weekend series against McMurry, where the Blazers took two-of-three in their non-conference matchup back in late February. The series will begin on Friday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader from Smith-Wills Stadium.
