Belhaven Wins Home Opener 5-2 Against Sul Ross State

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team opened its home portion of the 2016 schedule by taking the first game of a three-game series against the Lobos of Sul Ross State University 5-2 on Friday evening at Smith-Wills Stadium.

The Blazers (6-2, 1-0) struck first in their first time at bat. After a leadoff double by Dane Gecina, Adam Kowalczyk brought him home for the first Blazers run.

After the Lobos (5-6, 0-1) tied the game in the top half of the third, the Blazers answered in the bottom half of the frame to retake the lead, 2-1.  JG Miley led off the half inning with an infield single. After moving to third base, and with Terrell Hodges at the plate, Miley would come in to score on a balk by the Lobo starting pitcher.

The Blazers would add three more runs to help seal the win. With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the fourth inning, Tee Payne drew an RBI walk to score Kowalczyk, which gave the Blazers the 3-1 advantage. The next batter, Miley, would drive in the fourth run on a fielder's choice, scoring Will Mullen.

Leading 4-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, the Blazers' fifth run scored when Trey Escheberger put a ball in play that resulted in a fielding error, scoring Terrell Hodges, who started the inning with a triple to right center.

On the mound, Tanner Cable (3-0) went seven innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while striking out five.

Chase Birch pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Zach Osha shut the door on the Lobos in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

The Blazers will wrap up the three-game series Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
