Belhaven Drops Cowboy Maloney Series Opener to Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team fell to Millsaps, 10-7, in the first game of the Cowboy Maloney Series on Tuesday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium.

Millsaps (11-10) started the scoring right out of the gate with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Belhaven (13-5) responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs thanks to Adam Kowalczyk's fifth home run on a two-run shot to left field.

The Blazers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third inning. After a Dane Gecina walk and a Terrell Hodges double, runners were at second and third for Kowalczyk, who singled to right field, scoring Gecina. The second run of the inning came during Trey Eschberger's at bat. With Hodges at third and Kowalczyk at first, Kowalczyk was caught stealing at second base, and Hodges stole home and scored on the play.

Leading 4-2 headed to the sixth, Millsaps scored four times in the inning to take their second lead of the game, 6-4. However, in the bottom of the frame, Belhaven answered with three runs to retake the lead 7-6, thanks to three straight extra base hits.

Hodges started the inning with a triple to right center. Kowalczyk followed with a double to center to bring in Hodges. Eschberger next hit a triple to center field to bring in Kowalczyk. The next batter, Will Mullen, scored Eschberger on a sacrifice fly.

However, Millsaps would respond with one run in the seventh to tie the game at seventh, and scored three runs to take the lead for good.

The Blazers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh after the Majors tied the game in the top half, but failed to score. In the ninth, the Blazers had runners at first and third with two outs, but failed to score.

The Green and Gold next travel to Marshall, Texas for a three-game conference series with East Texas Baptist. The first game of the series begins Thursday at 7 p.m. from Woods Field.
