Blazers complete sweep of LC with 5-0 win in finale

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Softball team wrapped up its three-game series with Louisiana College by completing a sweep against the Wildcats to extend the Blazers win streak to 10 games.

For the second time in three games, the Blazers pitched a shutout against the Wildcats, as Taylor Surrento went the distance for her third win of the season.

Surrento was able to pitch out of jams, scattering six hits and six walks to earn her first shutout as a Blazer. The junior had four strikeouts in the game.

Savannah Johnston plated the first run of the game in the third inning, scoring on a two-out double to right center by Dani Craft, after getting on second with another two-out double just a few pitches earlier.

The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Blazers until the bottom of the sixth inning when Johnston led off the inning with another double to center field.

After the next two batters were retired, Makenzie Hawkins started a two-out rally of six consecutive Blazers to reach on a hit or a walk. Hawkins hit a RBI double off the fence in right center, scoring Johnston.

Carly Yasses then followed with an RBI single to score Hawkins.

After Jordan Herring drew a walk, Haley Yasses hit an RBI single to left center, scoring Mary Austin Barber, who pinch ran for Carly.

Crystal Kehtel then walked to load the bases and Brooke Laigast followed it up with a single up the middle to score Meg Garton, who pinch ran for Herring, with the fifth and final run of the game.

The Blazers win extends the teams winning streak to 10 games. Belhaven has swept each of the last two ASC opponents and sits third in the ASC Standings behind #1 Texas Tyler and #6 East Texas Baptist. The Blazers split with the top two programs, going 3-3 against them in the first two weeks of the season.

Belhaven will return to action on Thursday with the start of a three-game series over two days against Sul Ross State. The games will be held at a neutral site, being played in Abilene, Texas at Abilene Christian University.
