Home runs propel Blazers to sweep of LC in Saturday doubleheader

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Blazers picked up a sweep of Louisiana College on Saturday at Jim McLeod Field, winning 4-0 and 3-2 over the Wildcats.

Julienne Broussard tossed a complete game shutout in game one to lead the Blazers to a 4-0 victory to start the day. Broussard allowed just three baserunner on two hits and one hit batter, while striking out six.

Carly Yasses started the scoring in game one with a two run home run with two outs in the bottom of the first. Makenzie Hawkins started the rally with a two-out double off the centerfield fence.

In the second inning, the Blazers put together another mini two-out rally, which began with Brooke Laigast drawing a walk. Dani Craft followed it up with another home run, giving the Blazers the 4-0 lead, which it held for the remainder of the contest.

In game two, Belhaven jumped out to another lead in the first inning, as Hawkins followed up walks by Craft and Hannah Holloway with a RBI single to score Craft.

In the fourth, pitcher Jordan Herring aided her own cause with an RBI double off the top of the fence in right center to score Laigast, who had reached earlier in the inning with a single.

The Blazers weren't done scoring though, as Yasses added a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, hitting a solo homerun to right center to lead off the inning.

The third run was important, as Herring lost her shutout in the top of the seventh inning with two outs, as Louisiana College's only runs of the day came on a two-run home run.

Herring finished the game with the two runs allowed on six hits and two walks. Herring had four strikeouts in the complete game effort, earning her third win of the season.
