JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven Baseball earned the six-game sweep of the season series of Louisiana College by defeating the Wildcats in a doubleheader on Saturday, 4-1 and 9-5.
The Blazers sweep the three game series in Jackson after sweeping the Wildcats in Pineville on February 19-20.
In game one, the Blazers got out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. After a fielder's choice by
Tee Payne,
Daniel Ammirati tripled down the right field line to score Payne. The next batter,
JG Miley, hit a fly ball to center field deep enough to bring home Ammirati.
The Blazers' third run came on a fielder's choice by
Trey Eschberger. With
Terrell Hodges at second and two outs, Eschberger sent a slow groundball to the Wildcat shortstop, Hodges rounded third and was caught in a rundown. Hodges scored after the ball was misfielded by the shortstop.
After the Wildcats added a run in the top of the fourth inning, the Blazers responded in the bottom half of the frame.
Dane Gecina brought home Miley on an RBI double to keep the lead at 4-1, which would stand.
Tyler Ezell (1-0) pitched two and two-thirds innings of relief to earn his first win of the year. He allowed two hits, one earned run, three walks and struck out two.
In game two, the Wildcats (4-13, 2-4) scored two times in the top of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Blazers (13-4, 4-2) would respond with four runs in the bottom of the third. Hodges started the scoring with an RBI single, scoring Ammirati.
Two batters later, Eschberger brought in the go-ahead run with a two-run RBI single to center field, scoring Miley and Hodges.
Will Mullen followed suit with an RBI single of his own to bring in Kowalczyk. Belhaven led 4-2 after three innings.
In the sixth, the Wildcats scored their third run of the game and trailed 4-3, but the Blazers responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Miley scored the fifth run with an RBI single to score
Colton Fontana.
James Peterson added the sixth run with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Miley.
The Blazers added one more in the seventh, when Payne brought Hodges home on a fielder's choice to make the score 7-3.
Belhaven wrapped up their scoring in the bottom of the eighth with two runs in the frame. Eschberger singled through the right side, bringing in Hodges. While Ammirati was at bat, Kowalczyk came home on a wild pitch to make the score 9-3 in favor of the Green and Gold.
Louisiana College would add two runs in the ninth, but Belhaven would win the game 9-5.
Tanner Moulder (3-1) went seven innings, allowing eight hits and one walk on three earned runs while striking out six on 90 pitches.
Now with a seven-game winning streak, the Blazers will wrap up the 11-game home stand on Tuesday with the first game of the Cowboy Maloney Series at Smith-Wills Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
