Blazers Hold Off Wildcats, Defeat Louisiana College 9-7

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers held off a comeback bid by the Louisiana College Wildcats, as the Green and Gold took game one of the three game series 9-7 from Smith-Wills Stadium on Friday night.

Belhaven (11-4, 2-2) scored each time in the first five innings, getting out to an 8-2 lead.

The Blazers started the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Adam Kowalczyk doubled to straight away center field, bringing in Dane Gecina, who walked to start the frame.

In the second inning, Belhaven's second run came home when Gecina hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Gabe Veith.

In the third, after an infield hit by Terrell Hodges, Kowalczyk homered in his second consecutive game, sending a two-run bomb over the left field fence for his fourth homerun of the year to put the Blazers up 4-0.

Louisiana College (4-11, 2-2), in the top half of the fourth, cut the deficit in half with two runs in the inning. In the bottom half of the frame, the Blazers scored three times. The scoring started with James Peterson's RBI single, scoring JG Miley. The next batter, Hodges, sent a fly ball over the left field wall for a two-run homer, his fourth of the year.

The Green and Gold added a run in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to six at 8-2. Miley, with runners at first and second, drove in an RBI single, scoring Veith.

The Wildcats outscored the Blazers in the final two frames, 5-1, but the Blazers added that insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Trey Eschberger singled to the third baseman, scoring Hodgeson the play.

Tanner Cable (5-0) went seven and one-third innings, allowed three hits and two walks on four earned runs, while striking out 12. Cable has struck out 10 or more batters in three of his five appearances on the year.

Zach Osha allowed one unearned run in the ninth inning, but held off the Wildcat offense to earn his third save of the year.

Belhaven will look to wrap up the three-game series with Louisiana College on Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium.
