Baseball Sweeps Eureka and Tougaloo

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader on a cloudy and rainy Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium, defeating Eureka 15-1 and Tougaloo 10-1.

With the weather conditions that occurred in the southeast, the Blazers, after their ASC series with Howard Payne was canceled in Brownwood, Texas, added matchups with Eureka College and Tougaloo College, who were scheduled to play each other this weekend.

In game one, the Blazers faced Eureka College (1-2), a NCAA Division III institution from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Blazers scoring opened up with James Peterson driving in Dane Gecina, who doubled to start the Blazers offense, on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Blazers exploded for eight runs while sending 13 batters to the plate. All eight runs scored with two outs. Gecina tripled down the left field line to score the first two runs of the frame, giving the Green and Gold a 3-0 lead.

Peterson would follow suit with an RBI single, scoring Gecina. Adam Kowalczyk drove in the next two runs on a single to the shortstop for the 6-0 lead.

The final two runs of the frame came off of the bats of Will Mullen and Trey Eschberger, who each singled to left field. The Blazers led 9-0 after two innings.

The Blazers put the game into double figures in the fourth inning when Tee Payne drove in Mullen for an RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hodges would triple into the left center field gap, scoring Gecina. He would later score on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 12-0.

After the Red Devils added a run in the top of the sixth, the Blazers answered with three runs. Hunter Harsh drove in a pitch hit, two-run RBI single. Harsh would come in to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it 15-1.

Tanner Cable (4-0) went five shutout innings for the Green and Gold, allowing one hit, one walk and six strikeouts.

In game two against Tougaloo (3-23), the Blazers' bats picked back up in the bottom of the third inning. Hodges, with Jacob Byrd on base, sent a fly ball over the left field fence for his second home run of the season to get the Blazers (8-4) out to a 2-0 lead.

After the Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the third, the Blazers responded by scoring six runs in the bottom half of the frame. Gecina started the rally with a bases loaded walk, scoring Daniel Ammirati. The next batter, Harsh, drove in two runs on an RBI single, giving the Blazers a 5-1 lead.

Kowalczyk and Eschberger followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 8-1 in favor of BU. Kowalczyk drove in Byrd and Gecina, while Eschberger brought Kowalczyk home.

The Blazers would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Gecina grounded out to the shortstop with runners on second and third. He would score Ammirati. Two batters later, Hodges reach on an infield hit to the shortstop, scoring Harsh.

Stephen Solomon (2-2) went four innings in his start, allowing one earned on one hit and one walk while striking out six.

Gecina extended his on-base streak to nine games with three walks and three hits on the day, while Hodges extended his hitting streak to seven games.

The Blazers will remain at home for a non-conference contest with Tougaloo on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium.
