Softball splits doubleheader with UT Dallas in ASC play

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Belhaven Blazers Softball team split its doubleheader with the University of Texas at Dallas on Friday, falling 5-0 before winning 4-2 in the second game.

In the series opener, Belhaven was unable to get a hit until the seventh inning, breaking up a no-hitter with a single by Taylor O'Dell.

Dani Craft had a pair of walks and Hannah Holloway also had a walk, but the Blazers were unable to string together base runners in the same inning.

Julienne Broussard was dealt the loss, despite striking out seven in five innings.

The Blazers defense allowed a bunt to work through the left side to the outfield and the Comets scored the opening run on the play.

The Comets added two more runs in the third after a fielding mishap led to a lead off triple that was followed by another triple. Then with a runner on third, the infield dropped a pop up in the infield to score another run.

The Blazers answered back in game two with a big four running inning. On a sacrifice bunt by Savannah Johnston, a throwing error allowed both base runners to come around to score and Johnston finished up on third base.

Then O'Dell reached on a fielder's choice in which Johnston beat the throw home.

The inning wasn't over though, as O'Dell worked her way around the base path and scored on a Brooke Laigast single through the left side.

Jordan Herring picked up her first win of the season, scattering six hits and two runs over a complete game seven innings. Herring had a season best six strikeouts and did not allow a walk or a hit by pitch.

Belhaven and UT Dallas will decide the series on Saturday in the rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
