JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Softball team pulled off a series victory over No. 1 University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday as
Julienne Broussard and
Dani Craft led the Blazers to a 4-1 victory in the rubber match of the three-game weekend.
Craft broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when she homered to straight away centerfield over the batter's eye of Jim McLeod Field.
Brooke Laigast, who reached on an error prior to Craft coming to the plate, also scored with Craft's first home run of the season, giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
Texas-Tyler scored for the first time against Broussard on the weekend, although an error was needed to snap the pitcher's scoreless innings streak. Rose Sullivan stole second base and
Carly Yasses's throw wasn't covered, ending up in centerfield. Sullivan was able to take the error and come around from second to score the Patriots only run.
It was the first run against Broussard, albeit unearned, in 14 innings, after her complete game shutout on Friday.
Broussard finished the game with just three hits allowed, while striking out four. Over the two days, Broussard pitched 14 innings, allowing five hits, seven walks, and one unearned run, while striking out 14 Patriot batters.
Belhaven answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Haley Yasses singled down the left field line to score pinch runner
Meg Garton from second base. Garton took
Savannah Lyon's spot at second after Lyon hit a standup double off of the top of the fence in left center.
The Blazers weren't finished though, as
Hannah Holloway extended the lead in the fifth inning with a solo homerun to left. It was the third homerun for the Blazers this weekend against the top-ranked Patriots.
The wins Friday and Saturday by the Blazers handed the Patriots two losses in the regular season for the first time since 2014. It is also the first time the Patriots lost two games in the same weekend series since losing to LeTourneau twice on April 9, 2011.
Belhaven is set to return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Holly Springs, Mississippi for a double header against NCAA DIII Independent Rust College in a non-conference battle.
