PINEVILLE, La. - The Belhaven Baseball team earned its first victory of the 2016 season on Friday night in the first game of a three-game series against Louisiana College at Billy Allgood Field.
Belhaven (1-1) trailed through the first four innings after Louisiana College (2-5) struck first in the first and third innings with two runs apiece. Belhaven would get two of the four back with single runs in the third and fifth innings.
Belhaven's first run came via a
James Peterson single, scoring
JG Miley.
Tee Payne would score the second run for the Blazers in the fifth inning. After Payne led off the inning with a double to right center field, Miley attempted a bunt, causing two Wildcat errors to score Payne from second for Belhaven's second run.
From the sixth inning on, Belhaven did not look back. The Green and Gold outscored the Wildcats 10-6 in the final four frames, with consecutive three run innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth.
Miley, with the bases loaded in the sixth, scorched a triple into right center, scoring
Adam Kowalczyk,
Trey Eschberger and Payne to give the Blazers their first lead of the night, 5-4.
In the seventh,
Will Mullen singled drove in Peterson, who walked to start the inning. After a sac bunt by
Daniel Ammirati, Eschberger singled, driving in Kowalczyk, who singled, and Mullen to give the Blazers the 8-5 advantage.
In the Blazers eighth,
Terrell Hodges would single and steal second. Two batters later, Kowalczyk delivered his first home run of the season to give the Blazers a 10-5 lead. The next batter, Mullen, drove a triple into the right center field wall. He would score on a wild throw made by Zane Corbell. Belhaven was up 11-5 at that point.
Leading 11-8 going into the ninth, the Blazers would add an insurance run when
Dane Gecina singled in Payne, who doubled into left field.
Miley finished the night 3-for-6, with three RBIs, while Hodges also went 3-for-6 on the night. Kowalczyk drove in two runs, scored three times and went 2-for-4 at the dish.
On the mound,
Tanner Cable (1-0) made his first appearance in a Blazer uniform, and he made history for the Blazers. Cable went six innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, one walk, and struck out 12 batters, tying a school record, dating back to 2010.
The Blazers used a total of seven pitchers in the opener, but
Shane Brown shut the door for the Blazers, coming in the bottom of the ninth with one out to earn his first save of the season.
The Blazers will wrap up the three-game non-conference series with the Wildcats on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
