Baseball Wins Both In Doubleheader, Sweeps Series With LC

PINEVILLE, La. – The Belhaven Baseball team swept a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to complete a sweep of the three-game series against Louisiana College, winning 3-2 in game one and 10-3 in game two.

In game one of the twin bill, Louisiana College would strike first in the bottom half of the first inning, but the 1-0 deficit would not last long for the Blazers. In the top half of the second, Adam Kowalczyk tied the game at one with a solo homerun to left center, his second home run of the season. Two batters later, after a Will Mullen single, Daniel Ammirati would deliver an RBI single to give the Blazers a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, the Wildcats would even the score at two apiece via a fielding error.

From the fourth inning on, opportunities would come for both teams, but no team could take the upper hand.

In the top of the ninth, after Trey Eschberger reached base on an error and a Tee Payne walk, Colton Fontana came in to run for Eschberger. With two on, nobody out, and JG Miley at the plate, Fontana scored the go-ahead and  winning run on a pass ball and error by the Wildcat third baseman.

Stephen Solomon (1-0) would go the distance for the Blazers in game one. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native threw all nine innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five.

In game two, the Blazers' bats came to life early and often. In the top half of the first inning, after two outs, James Peterson delivered an RBI single, scoring Terrell Hodges. After a Kowalczyk walk, Mullen tripled into right center, scoring Peterson and Kowalczyk. Ammirati followed suit with a triple of his own, scoring Mullen, as the Blazers posted four runs in the opening frame.

After Louisiana College (2-7) added two runs in the second inning, the Blazers would add a five spot to push the game to a 9-2 lead.  After a single and steal by Hodges, Peterson then walked and stole second to put runners at second and third. Kowalczyk would then reach on an error as the Wildcat center fielder was unable to complete the catch at the warning track. Two runs scored on the play.

After a single by Mullen, Ammirati singled to score Mullen and Kowalczyk. Two batters later, Dane Gecina would reach on a throwing error to score Ammirati for the fifth run of the inning. The Blazers would send 10 batters to the plate in the frame.

The Blazers (3-1) would add one more in the seventh inning to put them in double digits. After a double by Gabe Veith with two outs, Nick Rucker countered with a double of his own to score Veith.

Tanner Moulder (1-0) went six-plus innings in his first appearance of the season, allowing five hits, with one earned run and seven strikeouts.

Belhaven will remain on the road, but will be in front of the local crowd on Tuesday night. The Blazers will play the first game of the Cowboy Maloney Series against Millsaps College at Twenty Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
