JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's basketball's late rally came up just short versus Covenant College Saturday afternoon, as the Blazers fell to the Scots 78-70 inside Rugg Arena.
Covenant (6-5) held a double-digit lead over Belhaven (2-7) for the first 16 minutes of the second half, but a 17-4 Blazers run cut the deficit down to just four points with 2:48 to play. The Blazers did most of their damage from the free throw line during that stretch, making eight in 12 attempts.
At the 3:31 mark
Terik Richardson drilled a three-pointer from the left wing, and
Dyron Anderson made a layup on the ensuing Belhaven possession to make the score 65-61.
The Scots then scored two straight baskets to bring its lead back up to eight points. The Blazers made one final push with just under a minute to play when
Brandon Pressley drove down the middle of the lane and finished the layup while being fouled. Pressley made the free throw to convert the old-fashioned three-point play and trim Covenant's lead to five points.
But the Green and Gold was unable to convert on its next three attempts from behind the arc while Covenant finished the game by making eight straight free throws to seal the win.
Belhaven shot 49 percent from the field while Covenant finished at 46 percent, but the Scots attempted 12 more shots than the Blazers. The Scots also forced the Blazers into 20 turnovers, which turned into 31 points for the visiting team.
Ron Davis led the Blazers with 15 points and four assists while Pressley added 13 points and a team-high six rebounds. Anderson chipped in 11 points and two steals, and Richardson recorded eight points on 2-3 shooting from behind the arc. Eleven different Blazers scored at least two points.
Berto Dryden and Zack Allen totaled 16 points each to pace the Scots. Dryden also dished out a team-high five assists. Z Arima contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
Belhaven returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 3, traveling to Montgomery, Ala. to face Huntingdon College. Tip is at 6 p.m.
