Blazers Fall to Riverside Rival Millsaps, 63-56

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's basketball team dropped a 63-56 decision to Riverside rival Millsaps College Thursday evening inside the Hangar Dome.

After a hot shooting start, Belhaven's offense stalled considerably, and the Blazers would finish the contest with a 33 percent shooting mark while making just five three-pointers in 27 attempts.

The Blazers (2-6) jumped out to a 15-2 lead over the Majors (3-7), making six of their first 10 shot attempts. Victor Price drained a three-pointer to open the scoring for the Green and Gold, and back-to-back steals by Ron David led to fastbreak layups for Price and Terik Richardson. Jonathan Durham then nailed two straight shots from behind the arc to put Belhaven up by 13 points at the 13:10 mark of the first half.

But the Blazers would score just six points for the remainder of the first half, while the Majors' offense finally showed some signs of life. Millaps closed the half on a 10-4 run to trim Belhaven's lead to two points, 21-19, heading into the halftime break.

The Majors carried that momentum into the next period, opening the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 28-23 lead over the Blazers. Millsaps took its first double-digit lead of the night with 8:32 remaining when James Turner sunk two free-throws.

With 1:24 to play, the Majors held 57-44 advantage, but the Blazers mounted a valiant comeback attempt to trim the lead down to six points with 21 seconds remaining.

DJ Young-Beasley made a three-pointer and a Price steal led to a Davis layup to make it a 57-49 game. Millsaps pushed the lead back up to 10 points, but back-to-back layups from Davis and Rick Hodum brought the score to 60-54. With just over 20 seconds remaining, however, Belhaven was forced to foul and the Majors would make their free-throws to seal the game.

Davis paced the Blazers with 20 points, including 15 in the second half. Brandon Pressley added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Sam Kohnke scored 13 points to lead the Majors while Saxton Becker contributed nine points, five boards and four assists.

Millsaps shot 36 percent from floor and made five three-pointers in 16 attempts. The Majors recorded 13 steals and forced Belhaven into 23 turnovers.

The Majors' win tonight evens the season series with the Blazers at one win apiece. Belhaven earned an 85-76 victory over Millsaps in the first matchup between the two teams on Nov. 16.

The Green and Gold will look to rebound from tonight's loss on Saturday, hosting Covenant College at 4 p.m. inside Rugg Arena.
