Belhaven Edges Huntingdon, 65-62

JACKSON, Miss. - It wasn't always pretty, but the Belhaven men's basketball picked up its second victory of the season Tuesday night inside Rugg Arena, defeating Huntingdon College 65-62.

It was a close game throughout with neither team gaining a double-digit lead for the entirety of the contest. Huntingdon (0-7) jumped out to a 7-2 advantage, but Belhaven (2-3) rattled off 10 straight points to take a five-point lead of its own. Jonathan Durham and Ron Davis drained back-to-back three-pointers to jumpstart the run, and Justin Jones made three consecutive free throws on the tail end.

Late in the first half, the Hawks had regained their lead and a Jahal Robinson three-pointer put Huntingdon up 26-21. The Blazers would close the half on a good note, however, as John Loris made a fastbreak layup, and David Cole nailed two straight shots from downtown, including one at the halftime buzzer, to give Belhaven a 29-26 lead heading into the break.

The Blazers took their largest lead of the game at the 13:03 mark of the second half when Kyle Patterson converted a layup on the break and Loris and Victor Price followed with back-to-back three-pointers, putting Belhaven up 42-33.

The Green and Gold would maintain a lead over the Hawks until the 2:05 mark of the half. An 11-2 Huntingdon run erased the Blazers eight-point advantage and gave the Hawks their first lead in nearly 19 minutes of game action.

Brandon Pressley sank two free throws to give Belhaven 61-59 lead with just over a minute to play, but on the ensuing Huntingdon possession, Scotty Chadwick drained a three-pointer to give the lead back to the Hawks. But Pressley had the answer for the Blazers, finishing in the paint off the assist from Anderson to put Belhaven back in the driver's seat.

The Blazers would then force a Hungtingdon turnover on the other end, and make two foul shots to extend its lead to three points with just a few seconds to play. Chadwick's three-quarter court heave attempt at the final buzzer fell short and Belhaven was able to squeak out a victory.

Twelve different Blazers scored at least one point, with Pressley and Price leading the way with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Cole and Anderson added six points each while Davis, Loris and Patterson chipped in five points apiece.

Anderson dished out a team-high three assists while Pressley, Davis, Loris, Patterson, Durham and DJ Young-Beasley recorded two helpers each. Gian van Heeringen pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Andre Ashley paced the Hawks with 20 points and 10 boards. Wyatt Popovich and Charvez' Hobson added 12 and nine points, respectively.

Belhaven forced 21 Huntingdon turnovers while holding the Hawks to 40.4 percent shooting from the field. The Blazers got to the free-throw line often tonight, attempting a season-high 32 foul shots.

Up next, Belhaven travels to Abilene, Texas to face McMurry University on Thursday and Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday. Tip for Thursday's game is 7:30 p.m.
