Blazers Fall to War Hawks Despite Making Season-High 13 Threes

ABILENE, Texas - Belhaven men's basketball connected on a season-high 13 three-pointers and made 53 percent of their total shot attempts Thursday night in Abilene, Texas, but were unable to come away with a road victory, falling to the McMurry War Hawks 99-91.

Despite their hot shooting, Belhaven (2-4) was undone by McMurry's ability to pound the offensive glass and convert Blazers turnovers into points on the other end. The War Hawks (5-4) recorded 14 offensive rebounds for 14 second chance points, and scored 34 points off of 17 Belhaven turnovers.

The first half of play inside Kimbrell Arena was very tightly contested, with neither team able to gain an advantage larger than five points.

The Blazers utilized the three-point shot well in the first period, draining eight shots from behind the arc in 14 attempts. DJ Young-Beasley was a perfect 3-for-3 on three-pointers while Terik Richardson was 3 of 4 and Ron Davis was 2 of 3.

Trailing 38-34 with just over four minutes remaining in the first half, the Blazers rattled off 13 points to close the half and take a 47-46 lead into the halftime break. Davis, Young-Beasley and Richardson each made a three-pointer during that stretch while Dyron Anderson made a layup and Brandon Pressley added a short jumper.

Anderson knocked down a three of his own on the first possession of the second half for Belhaven, but the Blazers would then go more than 10 minutes of game action before connecting on another shot from downtown. McMurry scored 12 straight points over a two-minute stretch to take its first double-digit lead of the game, 69-58, with 11:22 on the game clock.

Young-Beasley's fourth three of the game at the 8:59 mark jump started a 9-2 Belhaven run to trim the War Hawks' lead down to three points, 76-73. But the Green and Gold's offense went cold, failing to make a field goal for the next five minutes of play, allowing McMurry to push its lead up to 12 points.

Davis converted a rare four-point play after being fouled on a made three-pointer, and Victor Price followed that with a layup to make it a 93-88 game with 1:01 to play, but the Blazers simply ran out of time to complete the comeback attempt.

Davis finished with a team-high 18 points and seven assists to pace Belhaven, while Richardson and Pressley recorded 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Young-Beasley collected his first double-double of the season, totaling 12 points and 11 rebounds. Anderson added eight points and dished out five assists. The Blazers finished with 27 assists on 34 made field goals.

Nate Estrada led the War Hawks with 24 points while LaRandall Scroggins and Luke Stephenson added 18 points each.

Next up, the Blazers complete their Texas road swing on Saturday when they face Hardin-Simmons University at 3 p.m.
