Men's Basketball Preview: Huntingdon, McMurry and Hardin-Simmons

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven men's basketball team will play three games this week before breaking for the Christmas holiday. On Tuesday the Blazers host non-conference opponent Huntingdon College inside Rugg Arena at 6 p.m. Belhaven will then hit the road for a couple of conference games, taking on McMurry University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday before facing Hardin-Simmons at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blazers (1-3, 0-2 ASC) will look to break a three-game losing streak when hosting Huntingdon on Tuesday. Belhaven earned an 85-76 season-opening victory over local rival Millsaps College before dropping road games to Rhodes College, Concordia Texas and Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Belhaven has had no problem putting up points this season, averaging 89.3 per game on 47.3 percent shooting, but has had issues slowing down its opponents. The Blazers are giving up 107.8 points per game while allowing opponents to 50.4 percent from the field. The Green and Gold are leading the ASC in assists per game (20.3), led by point guard Ron Davis' 6.8 helpers per contest.

Dyron Anderson and Brandon Pressley are each averaging a team-high 15.5 points while Davis is chipping in with 12.8 point per game. Pressley is also pulling down a team-high 9.8 rebounds per game while leading the conference in field goal percentage (69.2). The Blazers are shooting 37.1 percent from behind the arc, with Anderson (11-26), Davis (8-17) and DJ Young-Beasley (8-15) all making over 40 percent of three-point attempts.

Huntingdon College
Huntingdon (0-5, 0-0 USA South) is still in search of its first win of the 2016-17 season. The Hawks have lost twice to Berry College and once to East Texas Baptist, Wilmington and Birmingham Southern.

Huntingdon is being outscored by nearly 18 points per game while allowing opponents to make 11.2 three-pointers with 45.2 percent accuracy. Rebounding is the Hawks' most noticeable strength. Huntingdon is pulling in 15.4 offensive boards per game and boasts a +7.2 rebounding margin.

Andre Ashley leads the Hawks with 12.2 points and 7.6 rebounds while Brandon McLean is adding 11.8 points and 7.2 rebounds.

Huntingdon defeated the Blazers in each of the teams two meetings last season, including a double-overtime game.

McMurry University
McMurry (4-3, 2-1 ASC) is coming off of a 67-55 loss to LeTourneau on Saturday after previously winning three straight games. The War Hawks have picked up conference wins over Louisiana College and East Texas Baptist.

The War Hawks have relied on a stingy defense this season, ranking third in the ASC in points allowed (73.7) while leading the conference in opponents field goal percentage (39.9) and opponents three-point field goal percentage (26.3). McMurry also ranks second in the ASC in rebounding margin (+4.1).

Four different War Hawks are averaging at least 11 points per game, led by Kaan Yilmaz's 13.9 average. LaRandall Scroggins has chipped in 13.3 points while Nate Estrada and Luke Stephenson have added 12.1 and 11.1 points per game, respectively.

Nathaniel Jack is averaging a team-high 18.4 points while shooting 58.8 percent from floor and 50 percent from behind the arc. Jack also leads the conference in rebounding (12.4) and is seventh in assists (4.4). Christian O'Neal is pouring in 15.5 points per game and has knocked in 33 free throws in 35 attempts.

Belhaven dropped an 87-56 decision to the Cowboys last season on Jan. 2.
