MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite shooting 53 percent from the field while scoring 66 second-half points, the Belhaven men's basketball team dropped a 123-111 decision at Rhodes College on Wednesday evening.
For the second straight game, five different Belhaven players reached double-digit point totals, led by
Victor Price's 24 points off the bench (22 in the second half) in just 19 minutes of action.
Dyron Anderson and
Brandon Pressley recorded 20-point games as well, with Anderson dropping 22 and Pressley pouring in 20. Pressley also collected 17 rebounds, which is the seventh highest single game figure in program history.
Ron Davis added 14 points and nine assists while
Terik Richardson chipped in with 13 points.
Kyle Patterson added good minutes off the Blazers bench, recording seven points and eight helpers.
The 111 points scored by the Blazers is the sixth most in program history and the most since joining NCAA Division III. The Green and Gold's 32 assists tonight is tied for the third highest total in school history.
The Blazers and the Lynx played back-and-forth basketball for the majority of the first half, with neither team able to gain a lead larger than six points through the first 13 minutes of play. But Rhodes caught fire on the back end of the first half, pouring in 31 points in the final eight minutes of the period. The Lynx used a 25-5 run to take a 20 point lead with three minutes remaining in the first half.
Belhaven went on a 17-3 run to trim a 15-point Rhodes lead to just one point with 14:07 to play in the second half. Davis hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark the run while Pressley added three baskets to help close the gap.
But the Lynx responded with a 15-6 run over the next three minutes of play to stretch their lead back to 10 points. The Blazers were unable to get any closer than seven points for the remainder of the game.
Belhaven finished the game with 11 made three-pointers, their second consecutive game with double-digit makes from behind the arc.
The Blazers held the Lynx to just 43 percent shooting from the field, but Rhodes attempted 17 more shots than Belhaven. Brennan Sullivan and Daniel Darst led the Lynx with 18 points each.
The Blazers fall to 1-1 on the season with the loss while Rhodes improves to 2-1 with the win.
The Green and Gold will have a week off from game action before returning to the court on Thursday, Dec. 1, traveling to Austin, Texas to take on Concordia University Texas.
