JACKSON, Miss. - The Blazers women's basketball team was unable to complete the come-from-behind victory, as the Green and Gold fall 73-70 Tuesday night to the Huntingdon Hawks in Rugg Arena.
Belhaven (2-1) started out of the gates cold, with missed opportunities. The Hawks (3-0) were able to take advantage of Belhaven's slow start with a 21-13 first quarter in favor of Huntingdon.
However, in the second quarter, the Blazers rebounded to tie the contest at 31 at intermission.
In the first half, the Blazers had eight blocks, three apiece from
Samara Dingiswayo and
Courtney Harper.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Blazers trailed the Hawks, 54-50, but reclaimed the lead 60-58 with six minutes left in regulation thanks to
Sierra Pittman's two free throws.
After the Hawks tied the contest at 60 points apiece, the Blazers answered with a layup by Dingiswayo and two more free throws by Pittman with three and a half left in the contest.
However, the Hawks answered with four points of their own to tie the game at 64. On the next possession, after a missed layup by
Tajee Harper,
Vamikka Smith grabbed the board to keep the possession alive. Dingiswayo then buried a jumper to give the Blazers the lead, 66-64, once again with 2:21 remaining.
After three free throws by the Hawks to give them a 69-67 lead, the Blazers needed an answer. With 43 seconds left,
Candler Gregory drained a 3-pointer.
On the next possession, Huntingdon made one free throw to cut the deficit to one, but the Blazers responded with one free throw made by Pittman to give the Blazers a 70-68 lead with 22 seconds left in the contest.
Following a Huntingdon time out, Mackenzie Garmany hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Hawks the lead for good.
Pittman finished the contest leading the Green and Gold in points with 15, and also added four rebounds and three assists.
Dingiswayo finished with those three blocks, along with 12 points and five boards.
In the game, the Blazers finished with a season-high 10 blocks.
Belhaven will return to action following the Thanksgiving break on Thursday, Dec. 1, as the Blazers open American Southwest Conference (ASC) play on the road. The Green and Gold will travel to Concordia Texas for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff from Austin.
