Second Quarter Surge Lifts Belhaven Over Rhodes

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's basketball team defeated Rhodes, 63-52, in the second game of the 2016-17 season on Saturday afternoon inside Rugg Arena. 

After the Blazers took a three-point lead into the second quarter, the Green and Gold held the Lynx (0-1) to eight second quarter points. The Blazers (2-0) took a 37-23 score into halftime. 

In the first half, Rhodes shot 35 percent (10-for-29) from the field, while the Blazers went 45 percent (14-for-41), including 33 percent (4-for-12) from downtown. 

The Blazers out-rebounded the Lynx 42-33, and the Green and Gold scored 32 bench points to the Lynx's 19. 

In the Blazers win, Belhaven scored 34 of the team's 63 points in the paint, and also had 10 fast break points. On the defensive side, the Blazers held the Lynx to 22 points in the paint and no fast break points. 

Tajee Harper led the Blazers offense with 13 points and two steals in 15 minutes off the bench. 

Samara Dingiswayo earned 10 points, five rebounds and two steals. 

Candler Gregory had game-highs in rebounds and assists with 10 and four, respectively.

Allie Young led Rhodes with 13 points and added three steals, while Bailey Kramer finished with 12 points and seven boards. 

The Blazers now have won three straight games, dating back to last season. 

Belhaven's final game in this three-game homestand will be against Huntingdon on Tuesday. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
