JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's soccer team picked up its third win in the past five games Saturday afternoon, defeating conference foe East Texas Baptist 1-0 inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
The Blazers win is the 53rd of Head Coach
Josue Sabillon's Belhaven career, surpassing David Dixon's previous program record mark of 52 wins.
The lone goal of the game was scored by junior forward
Jessica Mahoney in the 29th minute of play. Mahoney beat a defender at the 25-yard line and another at the 10-yard line to put her in a one-on-one situation with the ETBU keeper. Mahoney then slotted a low shot into the left corner of the back of the net.
Mahoney now has six goals on the season, ranking her seventh in the American Southwest Conference in that category.
Mahoney nearly netted a second goal just before the end of the first half, nailing the crossbar on a shot 20 yards out.
Courtney Dresch collected the rebound off of a Mahoney's shot, and her follow up shot also hit the crossbar.
The Blazers (4-7) totaled eight shots in the first half while allowing the Tigers (5-3-3) to record just three shots.
ETBU desperately attempted to claim the equalizing goal in the second half, and nearly did so in the 69th minute. Kendall Vogt snuck past the Belhaven backline and came into a one-on-one opportunity with Blazers goalkeeper
Alexis McDonald. But McDonald was up for the challenge, deflecting Vogt's shot attempt away from goal and past the out of bounds line.
The Tigers managed two more shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
McDonald finished the game with four saves and recorded her second shutout of the season.
Mahoney tallied a team-high five shots while
Erica Rempel added two shots.
Next up, the Blazers travel to Tyler, Texas on Thursday, Oct. 13 to take on the University of Texas at Tyler Patriots. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
