JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven volleyball team took a 2-1 match lead going into the fourth set, but were unable to stop Texas-Tyler's attack in a five-set marathon, with the Blazers falling 3-2 Saturday afternoon inside Rugg Arena.
In the first set, it seemed that no team wanted to win the set, as the the teams went back-and-forth for the latter part. The set saw a combined 142 attacks, 53 kills and 72 points, where the Blazers were triumphant, defeating the Patriots 37-35 in the opener.
In the second set, the Patriots (13-5) took control of the set with a commanding 25-12 set victory.
Belhaven (7-13) rallied to take the third set, 25-23, to retake the 2-1 match lead.
However, UT-Tyler took the final two sets, 25-21 and 15-10, even though the Patriots and Blazers were evenly matched on attacks. The Patriots only out-attacked the Blazers by four kills, 22-18.
Kelly Aholt sets a new career mark in assists with 59 and 1,772 in her career. With her performance, she surpasses Amy Lejarzar's 1,742 assists for fourth-best in school history. She added four kills, two service aces and nine digs.
Lauren Whiting records her first double-double of her career with career-highs in both kills and digs with 19 and 12, respectively.
Jackie Gunderson also doubled up on the kills and digs in the match. She killed a career high 14 attacks, and dug out 20 attacks. She has recorded 20 digs or more in three matches this season, including two of the last three matches.
Blaykleigh Smythe missed her career mark of 20 kills by three with 17 on Saturday. She also added six digs and a block to her name.
Abbey Herman missed her career mark of 34 digs set on Tuesday at Millsaps by one with a match-high 33 against UT-Tyler.
The Blazers return to the court for the second ASC Crossover Challenge, hosted by UT-Dallas. Belhaven will complete the ASC West portion of the schedule with Sul Ross State and McMurry on Friday, and the weekend will round out with Concordia Texas on Saturday.
