JACKSON, Miss. - In a rough match that featured 30 fouls and seven yellow cards, the Belhaven men's soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
Ryan Thomas netted the game-winning goal for the Blazers just twenty seconds prior to the end of the first half. The junior midfielder scored for the second consecutive game, recording Belhaven's third goal in a 4-0 win over LeTourneau on Thursday.
The Blazers (4-6-1) totaled nine shots for the day while the Tigers (7-5) fired seven shots. Each team recorded four shots on goal.
All four of Belhaven's shots on goal came in the first half.
John Dunbar nearly gave the Blazers an early goal in the 11th minute of play, but his shot into the top left corner of the goal was pushed away by a diving ETBU goalkeeper.
Thomas led the Green and Gold with four total shots and two shots on goal while Dunbar,
Nicolas Cornejo,
Carmine Caruso,
Devin Little and
Alex Hale added one shot each.
Josh Gates recorded four saves in goal for the Blazers. Gates and the Blazers defense collected their second shutout in a row and fifth of the season.
Belhaven is now 4-2 this season versus American Southwest Conference opponents. After beginning the season 0-3-1, the Green and Gold has won four of its past seven matches.
Next up, the Blazers travel to Tyler, Texas on Thursday, Oct. 13 to take on the University of Texas at Tyler Patriots. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's game.
