Blazers Downed by Sul Ross State

ALPINE, TEXAS - The Belhaven University football team dropped a 52-36 decision to Sul Ross State Saturday evening at Jackson Field in Alpine, Texas.

The Blazers held a 12-7 lead over the Lobos at the end of the first quarter, but were undone by a 28-point Sul Ross second quarter. The Lobos racked up four touchdowns in the second period while holding Belhaven to six points to take a 35-18 advantage into the halftime break.

Sul Ross registered the first score of the game, marching 98 yards down the field on their opening drive, ending in a Jeremy Schilhab five-yard rushing touchdown.

The Blazers orchestrated an eight-play, 64 yard drive, capped off by a 32-yard touchdown pass from Hunter McEachern to Nolan Satcher, to make it a 7-6 ballgame.

McEachern found the end zone with 10 seconds left in the first quarter, running it in from a yard out, to give Belhaven a 12-7 advantage.

After the Lobos scored three unanswered touchdowns to begin the second quarter, Kevin Shief caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from McEachern with 4:10 remaining in the half for the Blazers lone score of the quarter.

Early in the third quarter, Sul Ross opened up a 24-point lead, its largest of the game, when James Davis connected with Byron Jones for a 30-yard touchdown.

McEachern tossed a 45-yard bomb to LaMiquell Roberts in the end zone at the 4:54 mark of the quarter to cut the Lobos lead down to 18 points. The Blazers recovered the onside kick attempt on the ensuing kickoff to take back possession at the Sul Ross 45-yard line.

McEachern then hooked up with Roberts once again for another Belhaven touchdown to make the score 42-30 in favor of the Lobos heading into the final period.

The Blazers would manage just one score in the fourth quarter, a six-yard Nate Williams touchdown reception, while Sul Ross recorded its seventh touchdown of the contest in addition to a 24-yard field goal.

The Green and Gold finished the game with 620 total yards of offense, just two yards shy of the program record set Nov. 16, 2013 versus Bethel. The Lobos tallied 531 total yards of offense.

McEachern recorded a season-high 513 passing yards on 34 completions. The freshman quarterback totaled five passing touchdowns to go along with one rushing touchdown.

Octavious Arrington led the ground game, collecting a season-high 46 yards on seven attempts.

Roberts paced the receiving corps with 165 yards on 10 catches while Jaquay Daniels addded six receptions and 136 yards. Daniels has recorded at least 100 yards through the air in three straight games.

Keith Marshall and Anthony Battiste led the Blazers defense with nine tackles apiece. Alvin Vaughn added eight tackles while Derek O'Neal and RaShun Smith talllied seven tackles each.

Belhaven drops to 1-4 on the season with the loss to the Lobos while Sul Ross State improves to 2-3.

Next up, the Blazers will host McMurry University on Saturday, Oct. 15 for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
