Blazers Drop Homecoming Game to McMurry

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven football team dropped a 56-7 decision to McMurry University Saturday afternoon inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium. 

McMurry scored seven unanswered touchdowns to begin the game before the Blazers got on the board with 2:04 remaining in the first half. Octavious Arrington topped off a 77-yard Belhaven drive with a 10-yard rushing score, his first of the season. 

Belhaven quarterback Hunter McEachern completed a 17-yard pass to Jaquay Daniels and a 19-yard strike to Arrington before breaking off a 31-yard run to set up the Arrington touchdown. 

McMurry pulled off a few long, quick scores in the first half as Kelvaughn Hayes rushed for a 74-yard touchdown, Jordan Washington return an interception 73 yards to the end zone, and Decorian Johnson ran a punt back 56 yards for another score. 

The War Hawks added three rushing touchdowns in the second half while holding the Blazers without a point. 

Belhaven finished the game with 19 first downs to McMurry's 15, but recorded 331 total yards of offense while allowing the War Hawks to accumulate 437 total yards. The Blazers, who ranked second in fourth-down conversion rate prior to today's game, converted on just one of nine fourth down opportunities against McMurry. 

Arrington led the ground game today with 33 yards on 10 carries while David D'Angelo added 22 yards on four attempts. 

LaMiquell Roberts tallied 88 receiving yards on seven catches to pace the Blazers receiving corps. Nate Williams recorded 57 yards on five catches while Daniels and Arrington added eight and seven receptions, respectively. 

David Lewis totaled a team-high six tackles, including a sack for a six-yard loss. Jeremiah Newson and Marvin Grady added one sack each while Maurice Stewart forced a fumble and came up with his third interception of the season. 

Belhaven drops to 1-5 on the year with today's loss while McMurry improves to 2-3. 

Next up, the Green and Gold travel to Pineville, La. on Saturday, Oct. 22 to take on the Louisiana College Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
