PINEVILLE, La. - The Belhaven football team was unable to withstand a second-half rally from Louisiana College Saturday night inside Wildcat Stadium, falling to the Wildcats 52-30.
Belhaven (1-6) held a 20-14 at the end of the first half, but the Wildcats (4-3) would go on to outscore the Blazers 38-10 in the second half.
Louisiana College got on the board first with an 83-yard Farron Jones touchdown reception at the 4:42 mark of the first quarter.
The Blazers quickly countered with a long score of their own as
Hunter McEachern found
Darien Thomas for a 70-yard touchdown reception just thirty-six seconds later.
On the next Belhaven possession, the Green and Gold orchestrated an 11-play, 80-yard drive, ending in an 18-yard
LaMiquell Roberts touchdown catch to give the Blazers a 14-7 lead.
The two teams would play the next ten minutes without a score before Louisiana found the end zone with 3:12 remaining in the first half, tying the game at 14 apiece.
The Blazers would get one more possession before the end of the half, and proceeded to march 76 yards down the field, resulting in a McEachern to
Jaquay Daniels score as time expired.
The Wildcats went 67 yards in just two plays on the opening drive of the second half, finding the end zone at the 14:31 mark of the third quarter.
On the ensuing Belhaven possession, the Green and Gold put together a 13-play, 73-yard drive that resulted in a 24-yard
Alonso Acosta field goal, putting the Blazers ahead 23-21.
But the Blazers would go scoreless over the next 21 minutes of play while the Wildcats rattled off four unanswered touchdowns.
Thomas collected his second touchdown reception with just under four minutes to play, a 24-yard strike from McEachern, to round out the Belhaven scoring for the day.
The Blazers recorded 35 first downs and 615 total yards of offense but were undone by five turnovers, resulting in 17 Louisiana College points.
McEachern finished the game with 437 passing yards and four touchdowns on 44 completions. The freshman now ranks second in program history for completions (243) and passing touchdowns (21) in a single season.
Belhaven's ground attack tallied a season-high 178 rushing yards, led by freshman
Fredrick Smith's 81 yards.
Octavious Arrington added 59 yards on six carries.
Thomas paced the receiving corps with 140 yards on eight receptions while Roberts compiled 125 yards on 12 catches. Roberts moves into third all-time in program history in career receptions (146) and fifth in career receiving yards (1,987).
For the second straight week, linebacker
David Lewis led the Blazers defense with nine total tackles.
Alvin McCaskey added eight tackles while
Derek O'Neal recorded seven tackles.
Belhaven returns home next week to host No. 11 Hardin-Simmons inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
